Preparing for the Next Winter Storm

Meteorologists have been calling for a major winter storm all week long. You cancelled your plans for the next few days…and now you wait.

Wait to see if it is going to snow…or maybe sleet/freezing rain will hit the area…or maybe the meteorologists were wrong and it won’t do anything (and you just cancelled your plans for no reason).

Are you bored as you wait for the storm? Let us help you out with a few tips to make sure that your home is ready for the next major storm.

  1. Check You Downspouts

Make sure that there is no debris, such as leaves that were not cleaned up in the fall or snow from previous storms, blocking your downspout. You want to make sure that your downspouts are not blocked so that water can flow away from your home.

  1. Add Insulation around Pipes

Frozen and/or broken pipes can be a huge expense for any homeowner but with a little prep, you can help to prevent a major expense later.

If you have pipes in your home that are located in cold areas, consider wrapping them in insulation in order to prevent them from freezing.

Also consider leaving sink cabinets open so the pipes are exposed to warmer air.

  1. Have Phone Numbers and Account Numbers on Hand

Make sure to have on hand the phone number of your utility company along with your account number.

In the event of a power outage, you want to be able to access this information quickly and easily.

Here are a list of Utility companies in our area…

  • PPL: 1-800-342-5775
  • Med-Ed and Penelec: 1-888-544-4877
  • Adams Electric: 1-800-726-2324
  • PECO: 1-800-841-4141
  • UGI: 1-800-276-2722

Should you experience a power outage, remember to stay away from down or low hanging power lines.
