Looking Back on 50 Years

How would you feel if you were in the following situation…

  • You have a 1-year old child
  • You’re a stay at home mother
  • Your pregnant with twins
  • Your husband was raised Amish and has an 8th grade education
  • Your husband has a job at High Steel as a maintenance man and the job is paying the bills
  • Your husband also has a small side business fixing appliances

Now imagine that your husband decides that he wants to start his own electrical business…

For Flossie Lapp (wife of Manny Lapp, founder of Lapp Electric), she did not have to image this because this was the reality of her life.

In 1969, Manny Lapp founded Lapp Electric. As Tim Lapp (youngest son of Manny and Flossie Lapp and Co-Owner/CEO of Lapp Electric) put it in his book Shunning to Shining…An Amish Family’s Dark Journey Into Light, “In the beginning, it was a one-man show.”

Tim goes on to say, “But business was good, and he needed to pick up an employee, preferably someone with a little more electrical experience than he had himself.” Two days before Tim and his twin brother were born, the first employee was hired, and the rest is history as they say.
